Wake Up!

By Asher Intrater

Twice we find the disciples falling asleep at a critical moment of prayer. The first time was on the Mount of Transfiguration. Yeshua took His three leading apostles up on the mountain to show them His glory and give them a glimpse of the coming kingdom of God. As He began to pray, His face and clothing were changed.  He became glorified. Moses and Elijah appeared. And right at the crucial moment –

Luke 9:32 – But Peter and those with Him were heavy with sleep.

The second time was at the Garden of Gethsemane. Yeshua is about to be arrested, tortured, and crucified. He struggles with His own soul to make the decision to take upon Himself sin, suffering, Satan, death, hell, and the grave. He is distraught. He asks His friends and disciples to pray with Him for just one hour. The eternal destiny of mankind hangs in the balance. He needs support. And right at the crucial moment –

Matthew 26:43 – And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

[While typing this sentence, I dozed off at the keyboard.] We have a tendency to become dull, blurry, and weary at critical moments of prayer intercession, prophetic revelation, and spiritual warfare. Could there be any more sacred moment than the Mount of Transfiguration and the Garden of Gethsemane? Don't you wish you could have been there?  If you had been, you would have probably fallen asleep as well.

Yeshua tells us all to stay watchful and keep praying (Luke 18:1). He warns us not to be like foolish maidens who forget oil for their lamps (Matthew 25:5). Scriptures exhort us repeatedly to be awake and aware (Romans 13:11, I Corinthians 15:34, Ephesians 5:14, I Thessalonians 5:6, I Peter 4:7). Our flesh fights against us particularly at the moments when the Holy Spirit most wants to get our attention.

Anointing Success

When the Holy Spirit "comes upon" someone, it brings an anointing of power.

I Samuel 16:13 – Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the midst of his brothers and the Spirit of YHVH came upon him.

The root of the Hebrew word for "came upon" is TS-L-KH. This root is also found in a different context meaning "cause to succeed." Psalm 1 speaks of a man who is blessed because he meditates on the word of God every morning and evening. Of this man it is said:

Psalm 1:3 - … whatever he does will prosper.

The root of the word "prosper" here is TS-L-KH. Thus TS-L-KH has a double meaning – to be anointed of the Holy Spirit and to succeed in whatever you do.

Israeli Elections

By Mati Shoshani and Asher Intrater

On January 22nd, Israelis will elect their next government and Prime Minister. In past months, the Israeli political map has changed dramatically with the emergence of several parties: Yesh Atid, Habait Hayehudi, and Hatnua. These parties were either barely surviving or non-existent a few months ago, but are now estimated to gain as many as a dozen seats or more each in the coming Knesset. In contrast, Kadima, the largest party in the last elections, holding twenty-eight of the Knesset's 120 seats, may not receive enough votes to hold a place in the upcoming Israeli Parliament.

While Netanyahu is likely to continue as prime minister, the make-up of the coalition is still questionable. Many Messianic Jews in the land are still undecided on their vote. While there is a desire to support the prime minister, there is also a need to balance the influence of the ultra-religious parties with a moderating element.

Why should Christians around the world pray for the Israeli elections? Surprisingly, almost 42% of the Bible (the historical books from Joshua to II Chronicles, and the prophetic books from Isaiah to Malachi) deal with the interaction between the kingdom of God and the government of Israel. There is a tension between the spiritual ideal and the political reality. The government of Israel is not the kingdom of God, but it is a kind of infrastructure that prepares the way for the kingdom.

The prophecies of the end times focus on a conflict between Israel and the nations of the world. The center of the conflict is Jerusalem - the religious and political capital of the nation. Government elections in Israel are a sign of the times. Yeshua will return to sit on the "throne of David" as the head of the government in Jerusalem. Election of the Israeli prime minister is part of the process leading up to the Second Coming.

God can intercede in the history, government, and affairs of men. The book of Daniel teaches us that God can raise into office or remove from office anyone He chooses (Daniel 4:17, 25, 32, 5:21, 7:27). He will respond to our prayers. Please pray and believe with us.

Teitel Conviction

Jack Teitel was convicted on Wednesday in a Jerusalem district court on two cases of murder and one of attempted murder. The attempted murder involved placing a bomb at the home of the Ortiz family in Ariel, because they are Messianic Jews. Their son Amiel was critically wounded by the explosion, suffering 100 shrapnel pieces in his body. To see report in Israeli press, click here.
