From the heart to the heavens

“For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.” Hebrews 13:14

All people have an existential need to build a home and make it into a place of safety, protection and inner peace. The concept that protection, safety and achievement depend on the creation of one’s own home lies deeply within us. As such, many people invest a large part of what they have into constructing an enduring, well- furnished house. However, good homes do not help us acquire the peace or security we long for and so desperately need. Often unhealthy relationships, loneliness and fear prevail in so many homes, leaving us literally crying out to heaven. Nevertheless, we delude ourselves into believing that we can create this secure place, lacking in nothing.

We block out the fact that in this world, at any moment, we could lose it all: our home, our finances, jobs, our health, our relationships – everything we have built our life upon. This is not pessimism but a reality that many millions of people have been confronted with throughout history, suddenly finding themselves with nothing. For this reason, it is worth asking ourselves what we build our lives upon. What is the source of our inner peace, value, honour and security?
