From Slavery to Freedom

By Tal Haroni

“I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.” – Exodus 15:1–2

Many scholars compare the crossing of the Red Sea with the creation of the world. God took His people out of slavery and brought them into a new identity as if creating them anew. Sound familiar?

“For in baptism you were buried with Christ and in baptism you were also raised to new life through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” – Colossians 2:12

Just like them, we went through a similar process where God brought us from death to life, from the slavery of sin to freedom in Messiah, from seeing ourselves as victims to becoming children of God. Now the real journey begins. Who are we, if until now we were defined by our perceptions of ourselves or how the world defines us? But now, there is a shift where God determines our identity.

The Israelites successfully fled from Egypt, they survived the plagues, and now they are on their way to the Promised Land. But God leads them into the desert. Their time in the desert is a time to search for who we are now after being liberated from slavery.

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by this Spirit we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” – Romans 8:15

Jesus rescued us from sin and purified us. Just like the Israelites in the desert, we begin a new journey. A journey of transformation, of renewal. When I started to believe in Yeshua, I thought all my problems would vanish like magic. I wouldn’t suffer rejection, pain, or fear anymore. But that didn’t happen. I crossed the Red Sea and then the journey of healing began. A journey of transformation into the likeness of Yeshua. The journey to embrace anew every day my identity as a child of God.

Are you on the brink of crossing the Red Sea? Or perhaps you’re deep in the desert wondering where God is? No matter what season you’re in right now or what you’re facing, God is with you and for you. When He is with you, nothing can stand against you! When He is with you, everything happening right now in your life will work out for your good.

I pray that your love for God grows with each step in your journey of faith. May God reveal Himself to you and fill you with his peace. May you know him and the power of His resurrection in every area of your life. May we all take on our true identity as His children and walk accordingly.
