"Yeshua Superstar" was the
headline of a major article in the magazine section that greeted hundreds
of thousands of Israelis when they sat down to read their morning newspaper on Monday,
August 16. The article was part of a series on different streams of Judaism
here in Israel.
Yesterday's victory was just one more battle that has been fought and won. The war is far from over. Although we know that the end is victorious, the daily struggle can still be difficult, especially for those who are victims of violent attacks, who illegally lose their jobs, are harassed in their businesses, are denied housing, have passports taken away, or are denied citizenship.
We are asking you to pray for the impact of this article on the hearts of those that have and will read it. Please pray that the truth of who we are (as represented in yesterday's article) would be a mighty weapon against the powerful and carefully planned attack being waged by the ultra-religious community to delegitimize us as Jews. Please pray specifically for Calev Myers and the Jerusalem Institute for Justice, who are in the forefront of the battle to portray us positively in Israel's national media, and to influence the court system to render just verdicts in our favor.

Another significant media testimony was broadcast this week (Thursday, August 19). Asher was interviewed by our friends on Al Hayat television, which reaches tens of millions of Arab viewers. The broadcast was the beginning of a fulfillment of a dream which has been growing in our heart for many years to share the gospel in Hebrew with Arabic subtitles. The interview started with a refutation of Islamic use of Song of Songs 5:16 as a reference to Muhammed. From there Asher proceeded to a presentation of the love of Yeshua as the only way out of the generations of hatred. He spoke on behalf of Israeli Messianic Jews to express reconciliation and salvation to our Arab "cousins."
We hope to have a fuller explanation of this broadcast in next week's update. In the meantime, please pray for this message to touch the hearts of many Arab Muslims.
Two news items were met with little excitement here in Israel: the power plant in Bushar, Iran, and the renewal of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Iran opened its first nuclear power plant in Bushar, despite all the diplomatic talk about sanctions against Iran, and assurances to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear power. International politicians are trying to down-play the importance of the event by saying the plant is just for civilian energy use. However, at this stage there is little that remains to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons. Iran's obtaining nuclear power, along with their consistent proclamation of intention to "wipe Israel off the map," ought to be quite disturbing. The opening of the plant in Bushar confirms to the Israeli population the inability of international diplomacy to stop the spread of Islamic Jihad. The low response within Israel probably points to a lack of faith that the international community will ever really be concerned about Israel's security.
This holds true for the renewal of peace talks. Everyone hopes for peace but there is not much expectation that the "photo-ops" with politicians will be able to solve the real problems.
